Spaces
by JDA
Of fireflies and falling stars
Of things that aren’t and
Things that are
The only thing that stays
the same
Is that everything changes.
Men make plans
God rearranges.
War is man’s temper tantrum
against His feng shui.
Another gigantic tree is cut,
twists and collapses in the
rain forest.
Eboli anyone?
Men make plans
God rearranges.
The only thing that stays the same
is that everything changes.

“Curious thing,” he said.
“I began missing you the
moment I met you.
I know that I’m talking
to you now,
but it’s as if I’m talking
to a memory.
I can see your hair, your face,
your eyes.
But you don’t exist.”
Sometimes I wake at night
and my heart aches.

For Lisa and Detroit
by JDA
Marvin and Tammi dancing,
and then came the world.
Mercy, mercy me
Don’t give up.
Feral dogs dancing in the deserted
streets of the Motor City as
Martha and the Vandellas echoing, calling
goes out around the world.
Are you ready for a brand new beat?
Don’t forget the Motor City, Baltimore and D.C., yeah.
Sun rising over empty city street
after street. Torn and stained curtains
blowing out of shattered windows
And the dogs run on.
They are fiercely meekless, and they
have inherited this piece of the earth.
Don’t give up cause things ain’t
what they used to be…
mercy, mercy me.
Dandelion
by JDA
The tallest dandelion
rooted
longed for that meander
of wind, or fate
to save him from the
scythe’s vicious arc.
Presently, a darkly tatooed
soft-winged moth
alit on his spore-filled
crown,
gently bending him to safety.

Fearless
by JDA
Dancing with tanks in Tiananmen Square
with no thought of thanks,
though millions saw him there.
The man…the man disappeared
into the mists of time.
He was as graceful as Nureyev
yet much more sublime.
Why did he do it?
Why do we not?
Challenge dark forces and
their soulless onslaught.
His divine spark burned
brightly that day.
Was it the dancer’s own grace
or God’s that moved him that way?
